   The Performing Arts Department offers 5 band classes with over 200 wind and percussion players in the program.  At the Lower School level (Grade 6), students are given the opportunity to play some wind instruments - flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, French horn, baritone and tuba.  Students are taught the techniques of playing these instruments as well as reading musical notation.  Ear training is taught as the students must learn to hear the correct pitches before trying to reproduce them on their instruments..


  The class is divided into brass and woodwind sections, taught by 2 of the band teachers meeting 3 times per week.  Specialists are sometimes brought in to work with small groups of students, reinforcing techniques specific to each instrument.  Students enjoy individual attention within the group setting.  Every Friday, both groups combine for a full ensemble experience.

    A presentation is shared with families in December, and the first formal performance will be held in May with the Upper School's beginning, intermediate and high school groups. Skills developed at this level lay the foundation for advancement into the Upper School Band program.  If students do exceptionally well, they may be selected to play in Band 2 and may also be invited to play with o
